Hi Element Family,
This Sunday, we are starting a new series, called ONE. It’s based on Jesus’ prayer for unity from John 17:
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
This is a such a revealing prayer from Jesus, and the really amazing thing about it is...he’s praying for us! That we would be as united as he is with the Father. That is quite a thought! A beautiful thought. An outrageous thought. An opposed thought.
We live in a world where lines are drawn to separate, discriminate, exclude, and defend. Many well-meaning people of every conviction and stance unconsciously allow fear to drive their compulsive line-drawing. Idealogical platforms are so often upturned into walls that can’t be breached by discourse and understanding. So many of us presuppose that complete agreement is a prerequisite for unity.
In this series, we are going to ask some tough questions about what it could mean to live into this plea from our Savior that we would be one. I’m asking all of us to show up with open minds, hearts, and imaginations. Let’s explore the possibilities of the way that our unity could express the glory and love of God to the world. See you at the warehouse!
You are loved,
